I am one of the three project PI's for the TAMU-ARS sorghum genomics team. Specific research projects in the group currently include:

1. The construction of an integrated genetic, physical and cytogenetic map
    of the sorghum genome.
2. Genetic mapping of agronomically important trait loci in sorghum for
    map-based gene isolation and marker-assisted selection.
3. Using direct selection technology and BAC sequence scanning to examine
    gene density in the sorghum genome and to aid in gene discovery.
4. Using DNA diagnostic microarrays/chips to explore the molecular basis
    that allows plants to adapt to adverse environments, particularly drought
    stress.
5. Comparative sequence alignment between sorghum and rice.
6. Analysis of genetic diversity in public sorghum breeding material

My lab has primary responsibility for the development of the integrated genetic/physical/cytogenetic map of sorghum. Our group has generated a high-density genetic map of sorghum containing ~3000 markers as well as a framework physical map consisting of ~26,000 sorghum BAC clones. The sorghum genetic and physical maps are integrated at more than 1200 points across the sorghum genome. My laboratory is currently collaborating with David Stelly and James Price to complete cytogenetic maps for the 10 sorghum chromosomes using BAC-based FISH (four chromosomes completed to date). Our lab is also responsible for the comparative sequence-based mapping between sorghum and rice and the development of the MySQL database for the curation of this data. We are also working with numerous collaborators on mapping and cloning agronomically important genes in sorghum including those involved in Al tolerance, thermotolerance, maturity, drought tolerance, seedling vigor at low temperature, and fertility restoration.
